Event Highlights

Streets of… August 28-30, Durham City

THREE days of free street entertainment based around folk, play and dance. Scottish supergroup and celtic dance act The Peatbog fairies headline the Streets of Folk festival, while buskers, acrobats and street performers entertain the crowds during Streets of Play. The curious spectacle of hundreds of people silently dancing in public to their own iPods in a Quiet Riot is the highlight of Streets of Dance. Serena Partridge The Gallery, Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton le Hole, North Yorkshire. Until August 8

FRIVOLOUS French fashions have come to a rural folk museum in North Yorkshire. Serena Partridge makes fantastical miniature pieces of clothing inspired by a passion for European costume.

Her tiny pieces create a decadent foil to the rural exhibits of the Ryedale Folk Museum.

Serena’s particular interest is in the flamboyant fashions paraded by the wealthy elite, such as 16th Century Venetian platform shoes rising to heights of 20 inches, or the enormous wigs worn by Marie Antoinette.

“Her pieces are exquisitely beautiful but highlight the artificiality and impossibility of our concept of beauty and fashion,”

says gallery manager Andy Dalton.

Also at the museum are – August 14 to September 16, new work by Andy Black; October 16 to November 14, artist in resident Flora Parrott. More information: ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk
