Welcome to your guide to the best restaurants in Durham, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire for Spring / Summer 2009.

Simonstone Hall, Hawes

VENTURE off the beaten path and you may come across hidden treasure. Simonstone Hall in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales certainly fits that description.

Set at the foot of Stags Fell with simply stunning views over Upper Wensleydale, the 17th Century hall is a destination in its own right.

Head here and you'll be following in the footsteps of some famous names – the mistress of Edward VII, Lillie Langtry, stayed here, and in more modern times it has played host to the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, while Kate Winslet honeymooned here.

Settle yourself in the orangery restaurant here and you can see why. The glass-fronted dining area with wooden floors is very contemporary, with views to die for during the day and a warm, intimate buzz during the evening.

The orangery is the more casual dining area – although for more formal occasions, there is a fine dining restaurant too with an a la carte menu menu boasting a wide choice, all in a beautiful setting.

Either restaurant has plenty to tempt the palate – from the hall’s famous Sunday carvery at two courses for £10.50.

The hotel prides itself on offering something for everyone – vegetarians will not go short here – while families with children are equally catered for.

Simply put, this rural idyll may just be your ideal spot – a treat for anyone who takes the road less travelled.
