Seaton Hotel, Seaton Carew

12:13pm Monday 23rd March 2009

PICTURE this if you will. A warm, spring day, a trip to the coast, and a table looking out to sea as the waves wash ashore and you let your tastebuds blossom around food for the soul.

Life’s natural pessimists might grumble about the reality being that you’d find yourself settled next to a banging kitchen door with a window seat but a distant promise, but shoo those pessimists away and try the Seaton Hotel, where every table has a sea view.

The spirit of the sea finds its way into the menu here, too, with the Surf and Turf restaurant boasting many of the fruits of the nearby waters.

Of course, Surf and Turf often inspires visions of insipid prawns hidden under a slice of beef, but here they do it properly.

Lobster with a 5oz fillet steak ought to dispel any worries.

There are some intriguing oddities here, too, such as the black pudding with scallops.

For the seafood lover, it really is a treat. But for those averse to fish, there is still plenty to choose from, such as venison Wellington in a port and thyme sauce, all lovingly prepared by the team under head chef Mark Jubb.

Diners on a budget will also find bar meals at two for £10 in the downstairs bar – with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and service that is all you could ask for.

So steer your car towards the coast, to the heart of Seaton Carew, and unwind in style – you’re sure not to regret it.
