Welcome to your guide to the best restaurants in Durham, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire for Spring / Summer 2009.

Amontola, Richmond

WORD of mouth is, of course, the strongest recommendation for a restaurant. And the word on Amontola could hardly be better.

Hailed by its customers as "the best restaurant in Richmond", this slice of Indian life has also garnered an endorsement from the Cobra Good Curry Guide and received a four out of four rating for its food when the reviewers from our sister publication, the Darlington & Stockton Times, came to call.

So what is the secret of the Amontola brothers, Moklis, Sam and Ali, who have made this a real attraction in North Yorkshire?

Quite simply, the trio and their friendly, efficient staff put the emphasis on quality food. Drawing on their own experience of many years in the trade, they have created an atmosphere of warm ambience and a menu that can cater for all tastebuds, from mild to positively adventurous.

There are interesting twists to the more familiar menu here, too, such as the chef's specialities of fish korai – dry curry cooked with garlic, fried onions and capiscum in a strong, spicy flavour, or the mogul-e-azam, consisting of three curries separately cooked and served with pilau rice.

Helpfully, the menu makes clear the strength of each dish to suit all tastes.

The restaurant can seat more than 120, with special occasions happily catered for – in fact, parties will find that staff will happily take a photograph with their own camera and frame it for you to take home free of charge.

As the trio declare: "Our objective and mission is to serve the best and tastiest meal."

Mission accomplished.
