THEY do things out of the ordinary at Oswalds.
Where else, for example, would you find a restaurant that offers you the chance to have an outing for family or friends complete with a full joint of meat brought sizzling to the table ready for the head of the household to carve and serve?
As general manager Mark Dempsey, recently returned to the venue, says: “We actually deliver it to the table and it's great theatre in the restaurant. When the diners see it coming, the noise level goes up with the anticipation.”
So popular was the service, originally brought in for weekend family outings, that a group of businessmen recently begged for it to be made available for their midweek gathering, a request that Oswalds was more than happy to comply with.
That is just one part of the Oswalds experience – an experience that sees the very best in local food and a bit more thoughtfulness to the menu than you might be used to. Take the MD’s Sausage Factory section of the menu – after finding a local supplier for the most mouthwatering of sausages, rather than restrict the menu to one variety, here you can tailor your choice, be it pork, leek and ground black pepper, sun-dried tomato, red pepper and maple syrup, venison or rich, tasty wild boar.
The Church Farm Steak House also offers no end of tasty treats.
Mark says: “We have got a cracking team of young chefs – a quality, inspirational team. We are looking at real, high-end presentation, while still making it affordable.”
The attention to detail continues through to the restaurant itself. The Sunday swift and friendly service makes it a splendid afternoon outing, but venture here on an evening and you'll find it shimmering with candles in candelabra on the tables and a gentle, intimate atmosphere.
And with the Herriott Centre and the beauty of North Yorkshire not far beyond the door, isn't this an outing you deserve?
