Welcome to your guide to the best restaurants in Durham, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire for Spring / Summer 2009.

Helme Park, Fir Tree

MANY a restaurant must envy the location of Helme Park Hotel.

It’s perched on the edge of the Wear Valley and diners can enjoy breathtaking views across the Durham Dales – the perfect spot for a Sunday lunch and a breath of rural fresh air.

Helme Park is far from a Sundayonly destination though. The restaurant, which new manager Paul McMenamin has been shaping for the last few months with the help of new chef David Murray, offers good traditional food, all from local sources and with frequent changes to the menu to suit the freshest ingredients.

But special offers have also been introduced through the week – fish and chips for £5 on a Friday, steak and chips for £5.99 on a Wednesday – to make this an all-week-round destination.

As well as the restaurant, with its sumptuous a la carte menu, the bar also serves meals.

The hotel is available for larger bookings too and makes an ideal spot for weddings and parties, able to host up to 100 people, or 150 for an evening disco.

Beautifully decorated and with a staff who are as friendly and efficient as you could wish for – and gorgeous bedrooms should you wish your evening meal to become an overnight stay – the Helme Park really has everyting you might need.
