At the beginning of the year, the high street in Barnard Castle, Teesdale, was looking a bit sad – Shop For Rent signs and empty retail units were everywhere. Now, with the opening of a wide variety of independent shops, it’s buzzing again. Jenny Needham has a browse around.

ONE of the biggest shop fronts on Barnard Castle high street was glaringly empty for a number of months but reopened in April as The Factory Store. The small chain, which also has shops in Whitley Bay and Chester-le- Street, sells surplus stock from different high street stores such as Marks & Spencer, Next and Monsoon.
