CAROLINE Turner, 36, is mother to Harry, nine, and lives near Northallerton. She works part-time in her husband Sam’s family’s business – Sam Turner&Sons Ltd, in the County Clothing department, and is also studying for a Royal Horticultural Society Diploma.
Sam Turner & Sons Limited was established in 1931 and is still a family business, selling everything you need for the farm, garden and country life. A traditional agricultural and horticultural merchant, the range of products under one roof is huge – from gaiters to goldfish, from quad bikes to quiche tins. The cafe serves locally-sourced and freshly cooked food.
The new autumn/winter range of country clothing includes classic brands like Barbour, Musto and Aigle as well as newcomers Liberty Freedom and Gumleaf, offering tailored tweeds for ladies with a modern edge.
There are top quality boots for every outdoor pursuit from Dubarry, Hunter, Aigle, Chameau and Brasher.

Autumn: love it or hate it?
Love it – bonfires, apples and blackberries to pick and cook with, walking through woods with all the glorious colour, lighting the first log fires of the season.
Do you like to be outdoors?
Definitely, I probably spend more time outside than in. I don’t mind a bit of bad weather as long as I’m wrapped up warm.
What are your favourite outdoor pastimes?
Walking. We live in such a beautiful part of the country with both the moors and dales on our doorstep.
And gardening. We have a new garden in the making that takes up most of our spare time. I walk my Cocker Spaniel Gertie for miles every day, which keeps both me and her fit. I’d love to do more shooting, I had a lesson and was hooked, but time and money don’t permit me to take up that particular hobby in a meaningful way just now.
What is your favourite local walk?
We’ve just discovered Hackfall (hackfall.org.uk) between Masham and Grewelthorpe – a steeply wooded valley down to the beautiful River Ure with the reward of magnificent views over the vale of Mowbray after a long climb uphill. My favourite walks tend to include a climb with a view at the top – Roseberry Topping to Captain Cook’s Monument, Sutton Bank from Kilburn. Studley Royal is beautiful in Autumn, a late afternoon walk ending in tea and cakes in one of the National Trust tearooms, then a wander around Fountains Abbey when it’s floodlit, sometimes with classical music or Gregorian chants playing – very atmospheric.
What clothing/equipment wouldn’t you be without in the great outdoors?
A Barbour jacket – my old Duracotton Polarquilt has stood the test of time and is fantastic on a really cold and windy day, and the new Barbour Amelia jacket (£189), is a smart new replacement. Also my Chameau Vierzonord wellingtons (£130), lined with neoprene so they keep my feet warm. I wear them instead of walking boots, they’re so comfortable, and they last forever. Mine are coming up six years old now and are still going strong. If you choose good brands then you really get your money’s worth in terms of performance and longevity.
