FRESCA Waring, who lives in Copley, has been selling flowers in Barnard Castle for four years, but relocated onto the main shopping street at the beginning of the year.
She’d done a number of arty and creative jobs, but when the chance came to take a floristry course at Houghall College, she jumped at it. Now, as well as selling beautiful bouquets to the townsfolk, she does a lot of weddings, funerals and corporate functions, and has just done Barnard Castle School summer ball.
“I go to market a couple of times a month in the Team Valley and have two English suppliers in the North-East.
I also have a Dutch wholesaler who comes over to the town in his great big wagon to deliver blooms,” she says.
Fresca also sells jewellery – nothing is more than £12 – framed pictures, clocks, garden ornaments and signs, one bearing the message “Mum’s garden, dad’s weeds”.
“I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket,” she says – or, presumably, all her flowers in one vase. “I try to cater for everybody.”
Originally from Liverpool, Fresca has been in Teesdale for 11 years now and loves the area. “It’s a beautiful place to live. People totally underestimate it.”
