AROUND 200 guests attended the launch party to mark the dazzling opening night of Lumiere.

The event in Durham's renovated town hall took place as the lights were switched on around the city centre.

Artists and journalists from across the country joined councillors and the team from event producers Artichoke to toast the success of the four-day festival.

Durham County Council leader Councillor Simon Henig welcomed visitors to the city, which is bidding for the City of Culture title in 2013, while Artichoke's artistic director, Helen Marriage, outlined the vision behind Lumiere.
