THE tenth anniversary of the “Oscars of grassroots sport” saw inspirational teenager Lyndon Longhorne named The Northern Echo’s Local Hero of 2009 for overcoming his disabilities and becoming a national swimming champion.
A host of stars and an audience of 1,000 attended a gala presentation evening at Hardwick Hall Hotel, near Sedgefield, County Durham. The Bannatyne Group was headline sponsor and the event raised £5,000 for Sports Aid Northern, which gives grants to youngsters making their way in sport.
