STUDENTS have raised a record amount for charity. Members of Durham University Charities Kommittee (Duck) collected £687,000 for regional, national and international charities over the past year, higher than all previous totals. The achievement was marked at a celebration evening held in Durham Castle’s Great Hall.
Melanie Punton, Duck manager, said: “We are delighted with the total. It’s been our most successful year ever in terms of fundraising.”
Events have included the annual duck race, which saw 20,000 plastic ducks raced down the River Wear, sporting competitions, talent contests and an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
The money raised has been split between 35 charities and good causes. The Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue team received £15,000.
More than 100 people attended the celebration event, including students, civic dignitaries and Durham University leaders.
